BLM Nevada Park Ranger Contributes to Award-Winning Student Film

As the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) commemorates 80 years of public‑land stewardship, we continue to highlight the everyday efforts that strengthen our connection to communities and the landscapes we protect. One recent example comes from Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, where a local student film has brought new attention to the work of BLM rangers and to the spirit of partnership that defines public land management.

BLM Nevada Park Ranger Chad Hoing played a central role in a College of Southern Nevada (CSN) student film created by filmmaker Carl Petersen — an impactful piece that was officially selected for a CSN showcase and won an award for its outstanding quality and storytelling. This recognition was highlighted by colleagues, who shared that the film’s success was no surprise given the strength of Hoing’s performance and presence on camera.

The film blends vivid Red Rock visuals with heartfelt interviews, offering an authentic look into the meaningful work of park rangers. Hoing’s contribution brought depth and sincerity to the narrative, helping convey the emotional connection rangers have with the land and the public they serve. The natural delivery, thoughtful reflections, and grounded pride became a defining element of the project — so much so that leadership jokingly credited the award to Hoing’s standout appearance.

This project not only supported a local student in achieving academic recognition but also strengthened community engagement by showcasing the spirit of Red Rock Canyon through the eyes of its rangers. The award is a testament to both the filmmaker’s vision and the genuine, compelling contributions of Hoing.

In addition to his role in the film, Hoing has made numerous, meaningful contributions to Red Rock Canyon and the surrounding community. He has led guided hikes for local veterans’ groups, creating inclusive and empowering outdoor experiences. He has also trained and taught stewardship principles to dozens of visitor services volunteers, ensuring future ambassadors for public lands are well prepared and knowledgeable.

Hoing played a key role in coordinating the Red Rock audio tour, enhancing visitor understanding of the scenic drive. Among his peers, he serves as a steady leader in interpretation, outreach, and visitor services — consistently elevating team cohesion, visitor engagement, and the overall quality of interpretive programs. His efforts reflect the dedication of BLM staff across the nation who help ensure that America’s public lands remain open, accessible, and meaningful for future generations.
