Plan ahead for a safer spring and summer on California’s public lands

As spring and summer recreation picks up across California, BLM California is encouraging visitors to plan ahead, check current conditions and make safety part of every trip. A sunny trail, cool river, open campsite or desert route can look like the perfect outing, but changing weather, rising temperatures, cold and swift water, seasonal fire restrictions, remote terrain and coastal hazards can quickly turn a trip risky without the right preparation.

Before heading out, visitors should review local weather, water conditions, fire restrictions, trail or area closures and site-specific alerts. Conditions can vary widely across California’s public lands, from sneaker waves and slick rocks along the coast to high heat and limited cell service in desert and inland areas.

Visitors should bring the right gear for the place and activity, including extra water, layers for changing weather, a map or downloaded navigation, a first-aid kit and properly fitted life jackets for boating, rafting, kayaking, fishing or spending time near the water. Campers should also check current fire restrictions before leaving home and never leave a campfire unattended where fires are allowed.

Wildlife and local hazards can also vary by area, season and terrain. Visitors may encounter bears, snakes, insects or other wildlife depending on where they are headed. Before a trip, visitors should check local alerts, keep their distance from wildlife, store food and trash properly, and never approach wildlife for a photo.
