BLM urges the public to help prevent wildfires
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — As dry and warm weather persists across the West, fire season continues on public lands in Wyoming’s High Desert District. The Bureau of Land Management reminds outdoor enthusiasts to stay cautious while recreating. Weather forecasts indicate continued high temperatures, high winds and dry conditions across southern Wyoming. Cured vegetation and these weather conditions could cause wildfires to grow rapidly.
Each year, preventable wildfires threaten lives, property and precious resources. The BLM urges everyone to do their part to protect public lands by staying fire-safe while recreating.
Here are some tips to help reduce the risk of wildfires while enjoying your public lands:
- When camping on public lands, never leave your campfire unattended. Ensure your campfire is “dead” out before leaving or turning in for the night. If your campfire is too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.
- If towing a boat or trailer, ensure your safety chains are properly secure and not dragging on the ground.
- Never Park or drive your vehicle on tall dry or dead grass. Your vehicle can ignite the vegetation and start a fire.
- Be fire-smart when target shooting. Choose a clear area free of flammable materials and bring a fire extinguisher or water. Exploding targets and tracer ammunition are prohibited on all public lands in Wyoming under year-round wildfire prevention restrictions.
Fire restriction information can be found at www.blm.gov/programs/public-safety-and-fire/wyoming/fire. Be aware of local public safety area closures, take precautions before venturing out, and be careful with anything that could start a fire.
