The BLM administers the Federal onshore oil and gas leasing program in Alaska. Oil and gas leasing on Alaska’s Federal lands is concentrated in three regions: the Cook Inlet Region in southcentral Alaska includes both sides of the Cook Inlet, the approximately 23-million-acre National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska and the approximately 1.6-million-acre Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Federal lands produce millions of barrels of oil and millions of dollars annually.
Oil from the North Slope flows through the 800-mile-long Trans-Alaska Pipeline System from Prudhoe Bay down to Valdez where some of the crude oil is shipped to refineries in and out of the state to make products that Alaskans and all Americans depend upon. Alaskan oil products heat homes fuel cars, planes, boats, and are key in road construction.
