Salem, Ore. – Access to the Salmon River and several facilities within the Bureau of Land Management’s Wildwood Recreation Site will be temporarily closed on July 15 due to public safety concerns. During that time, crews will be using a helicopter to transfer logs from Wildwood to various locations along the river to restore salmon habitat.

The logs will be placed within the river to create habitat structures and flow patterns sought after by salmon and other species of native fish for spawning and cover. This project will help serve the American family by being good neighbors, supporting traditional land uses such as grazing, and providing access to hunting, fishing, and other recreational opportunities.

“We appreciate visitors’ understanding as we complete this work in support of fish habitat restoration,” said Jose Linares, Northwest Oregon District Manager.

The temporary closure will prohibit all access to the river, as well as the family picnic area and trailheads, including the Cascades Streamwatch Trail, Wetlands Boardwalk Trail and underwater viewing chamber. The Boulder Ridge Trail accessing the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness will also be closed. The upper area of Wildwood Recreation Site will remain open, which includes the group picnic area.
