Salem, Ore. -- The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Northwest Oregon District, Siuslaw Field Office will host a public meeting on June 14, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the recently released Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement that will analyze the safety of the dam located at Hult Reservoir. The meeting will be held at Hult Reservoir; the parking area is located approximately 1.5 miles down BLM Road 15-7-35 from Horton, OR.

Hult Dam is an earthen embankment, non-power generating dam. Originally built by a private logging company in the 1940s to serve as a mill pond. The BLM began managing of the dam in 1994. A fish ladder constructed in 1997 at the spillway, facilitates trout and limited salmon passage. The reservoir is used for boating and fishing. The dam is approximately 75 years old and although it is regularly maintained, the BLM wants to ensure its safe operation into the future, and is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement, which analyzes the effects of safety alternatives on Hult Reservoir and other resource uses associated with Hult Reservoir. Currently, the safety alternatives being considered are: no-action (continue to conduct regular maintenance), upgrading or re-building of the dam, partial breach of the spillway, and dam removal. More information specific to this project can be found on the BLM’s planning website, eplanning.blm.gov.

Public comments will be accepted through June 29, 2018. Official Comments can be emailed to blm_or-no-publiccomments_nepa@blm.gov ATTN: Panchita Paulete, Hult Reservoir and Dam Safety EIS.
