Meadowood Building New Bike Trails Volunteers Needed For Mountain Bike Trail Work Days

The Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) has announced that it will being adding mountain bike trails to the more than 13 miles of hiking trails on the 800-acre site.Volunteers are needed to help BLM staff clear corridors, build trails, and assist with finish work. Mountain Bike Trail Work Days for 2013 will be held on the following Saturdays: February 16 March 2, 16 and 30; April 13 and 27; May 11, 18 and 25; June 8, 22, and 29; July 13, 20 and 27; and August 10, 17 and 24.*Workdays subject to change/cancellation due to weather or other factors.* Volunteers are asked to meet at the Meadowood Trailhead located at 10324 Belmont Blvd, Lorton, Virginia, 22079. Trail work will run from 9 AM to 3 PM. Please arrive at 8:45 AM to sign in and enjoy a cup of coffee and a donut. If you are not able to work the entire time, help is appreciated for whatever hours your schedule permits.Drinking water, snacks, and tools will be provided. Volunteers should bring water bottles and coffee mugs to cut down on paper/plastic waste. Volunteers should also bring work gloves and wear clothing and footwear suitable for doing trail work outside. Expect to get dirty.Three different trails are planned that will connect with an existing five mile loop. Each bike trail will be different in flavor than the others. The first one being built is a flow/jump/pump line. The trails will be machine built and hand finished. Lots of hands-on-deck will be needed for the hand work.Your volunteer hours count towards official MORE workdays, and add unbelievable value to the trail system as the time you volunteer is worth $22/hour towards our fundraising goal of approximately $65,000. The Meadowood bike trails will be the newest Trail network in Southern Fairfax County. MORE (The Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts), Inc. is a 501c (3) nonprofit organization representing thousands of area mountain bikers. Founded in 1992, MORE maintains more than 400 miles of natural-surface trails in 41 state and county parks throughout the region. MORE members contribute more than 6,000 volunteer hours annually and have constructed nearly 100 miles of new, sustainable trail.
