Green Saddle Fire 100% contained

GOLCONDA, Nev. – The Green Saddle Fire started around 6:18 p.m. on the June 16, northeast of Golconda by Button Point. The fire started on public land and grew rapidly with northeast winds blowing at 20-25mph. Fire units from the BLM, Winnemucca Rural Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), Golconda VFD and Winnemucca City VFD converged on the fire. The fire's forward progress was stopped around 8:45 p.m. and is considered 100% contained with 182 total acres burned as of 12:30 a.m. this morning. Full control is expected this afternoon. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The fire was managed under a Unified Command between the BLM, Winnemucca Rural and Golconda VFDs. Structures were threatened for a brief time, but no structures burned. A total of 9 BLM engines, 2 Dozers, 1 Water Tender and 2 Battalion Chiefs worked to halt the fire's spread with the assistance of 8 engines from the rural departments. "This fire had a lot of potential to grow large. There is an excellent working relationship between our VFD partners and the BLM that continues to build with each fire we work on together." said Donovan Walker, Fire Management Officer for the Winnemucca BLM. "Working together, we are able arrive on scene quickly to put our assets to work on a fire in a seamless effort."
Since June 7, the Winnemucca BLM has responded to 20 fires burning 766 acres of public and private land. All of these fires have been human caused. On, June 7, a single vehicle caused 13 fires while traveling westbound on I-80 between mile marker 222 and mile marker 103. Conditions are ripe for wildfires and the public can help to prevent roadside fires by maintaining their vehicles, ensuring chains are not dragging on trailers and be aware of tire condition on their vehicles.
The fire danger on the Winnemucca District BLM will be moving to "High" effective Monday June 18.
