MONTICELLO, Utah – In support of Administration goals to serve American families, enhance recreation experiences and connect kids to America’s natural and cultural heritage, Cedar Mesa permit reservations will be available online at Recreation.gov, starting Feb. 20, 2018. The permit system was put in place in the 1980s to help maintain a quality visitor experience and protect cultural resources. The switch to online reservations makes trip planning easier and more efficient.
Reservations for Cedar Mesa are required year round for day use, overnight backpacking and stock use in the following Cedar Mesa canyons and tributaries: Grand Gulch, Slickhorn Canyon, Fish Canyon, Owl Canyon, North and South Forks of Mule Canyon, Road Canyon and Lime Creek. A day-use permit is also required to visit Moon House Ruin. Permit requirements and fees may vary by location and time of year.
Overnight backpacking permits are limited during the busy seasons, March 1 – June 15 and September 1 – October 31. For each trailhead, up to 20 visitors are permitted each day for overnight trips. Twelve visitor spaces may be reserved five to 90 days in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. The remaining eight spaces are available for walk-in visitors at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station on the morning of the trip. During the low-use season, overnight permits may be obtained at the self-pay stations at trail head and kiosk locations on Cedar Mesa.
Day use hiking permits are not limited, with the exception of Moon House Ruin. Day hiking permits are available year round at trailhead self-pay stations and kiosks. Permits to Moon House Ruin may be reserved in advance and are limited to 20 visitors per day.
