BLM Reopens Cow Mountain Recreation Management Area

UKIAH, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management Ukiah Field Office reopened the Cow Mountain Recreation Management Area in Mendocino and Lake Counties on Monday, Oct. 23. The recreation management area was temporarily closed recently due to fire danger.
The Redwood and Sulphur Fires, which form the Mendocino Lake Complex Incident, burned nearly 39,000 acres in close proximity to the Cow Mountain Recreation Management Area, but are now listed at 98 percent contained. The BLM is committed to keeping public landscapes healthy and productive. Outdoor enthusiasts are reminded to be careful when recreating on public lands to prevent wildfires (www.readyforwildfire.org/Prevent-Wildfire/). Tips include not driving your vehicle onto dry grass or brush as hot exhaust pipes and mufflers can spark fires; carrying a fire extinguisher, shovel and bucket of water; getting a permit for any campfire or use of portable gas stoves (preventwildfireca.org/Campfires/). Also, hot bullet fragments and/or exploding targets from recreational shooting can spark a wildfire. Shooters are responsible for fires started by their shooting activities.
The BLM strives to be a good neighbor in the communities we serve, where we provide opportunities for economic growth with space for traditional uses such as ranching, mining, logging, and energy development as well as recreation, hunting and fishing. The Cow Mountain Recreation Management Area (blm.gov/visit/cow-mountain) encompasses 60,000 acres where the public can bike, hike, camp, picnic, horseback ride, drive off-highway vehicles, target shoot or hunt. The northern area is set aside for non-motorized recreation, with the southern portion designated for off-highway vehicles. A creek and mountain ridge separate the areas, and the trail systems do not interconnect. The terrain is rugged with elevations ranging from 800 to 4,000 feet. The area offers beautiful views of Ukiah and Lake County, pockets of old-growth fir, several types of oak, willows, more than 31 miles of stream, 13 reservoirs, and habitat for black-tail deer, bear, wild turkey and others.
