BLM, interpretive association to lead full moon hike in King Range NCA

WHITETHORN, Calif. – Outdoor enthusiasts will have the opportunity to watch a full moon rise over the King Range and the Pacific Ocean, in a free, guided hike, offered Friday, July 27, by the Bureau of Land Management and the Lost Coast Interpretive Association.

Hikers will meet at 6 p.m. the BLM’s King Range Office, 768 Shelter Cove Rd., and carpool to the trailhead.  The hike is about 2 ½ miles each direction, with a 1,800-foot elevation gain from the trailhead to King Peak.   Moonrise/sunset occurs at 8:17 p.m., after which hikers will descend from the peak.

“We are proud to partner with the Lost Coast Interpretive Association to provide this opportunity for people to connect with nature in the King Range,” said King Range NCA Manager Greg Wolfgang.  “Experiencing moonrise from King Peak is an unforgettable experience.”

Participants should bring plenty of water, snacks and a flashlight or headlamp.  Organizers recommend sturdy hiking boots and clothing layers.

BLM park ranger Avery Love will lead the hike.  He has six years’ experience working in the King Range.  He is a graduate of Humboldt State University, where he studied environmental management and protection.

The King Range National Conservation Area encompasses 68,000 acres along 35 miles of California’s north coast.  The landscape is dramatic, with King Peak rising to more than 4,000 feet just 3 miles from the coast.
