CANON CITY, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Royal George Field Office is seeking public comment on its draft Environmental Assessment to lease the Salida East Recreation Site to Colorado Parks and Wildlife under the Recreation & Public Purposes Act.

CPW, through the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area partnership, manages 16 recreation sites through an R&PP lease. Salida East is located within the AHRA. This proposal would modify CPW’s lease to add the 19-acre Salida East site.

“As neighbors to the local community, we are eager to hear about any issues and concerns from the public,” said Royal Gorge Field Manager, Keith Berger. “Moving forward with our work on the EA, we want to make sure that a decision to lease Salida East to CPW will benefit residents and visitors alike.”

With an approved lease, the BLM and CPW would collaboratively manage the area. If the lease is approved, CPW would collect fees to fund maintenance, capital improvements and monitoring costs, thereby reducing user-related conflicts, ensuring natural resource protection and improving safety and management in the area.

In 2015, recreation activities on BLM-managed lands generated $543 million and supported 4,625 jobs in Colorado.
