Winnemucca, Nev. – The Black Rock Field Office (BRFO), Winnemucca District, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been selected to host a teacher intern for the program, Teachers on the Public Lands (TPL).  This program provides funding for teachers to explore public lands and create education projects and materials to utilize in their own classroom as well as the field.

The BRFO will be seeking an interested teacher to come and spend June 1st through approximately August 10th on the Black Rock Desert – High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area (NCA) during the summer months.  The selected teacher will learn about the NCA and work with BLM staff to create place-based educational materials while earning three graduate credits and a paid stipend from the University of Colorado Denver.  The teacher program is a minimum of 160 hours and includes an on-line, self-directed course.

Educational materials created during the teacher’s residency at Black Rock will be utilized at the teachers’ school as well as the Black Rock Field Station.

The TPL program is developed by Hands of the Land (HOL), the BLM and the University of Colorado Denver. HOL is an interagency network of field classrooms connecting K – 12 students, teachers, families, and volunteers to their public lands and waterways. HOL sites have hands-on education programs in natural and cultural settings that have been developed in partnership with local schools. The programs are designed to support established school curriculum and local standards of learning as well as agency resource management objectives. HOL is a program of Partners in Resource Education (PRE), a partnership of eight Federal agencies and a non-profit foundation dedicated to enhancing learning on public lands. The PRE agencies are: BLM, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, NOAA Marine Sanctuaries Program, Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Education. The National Environmental Education Foundation coordinates this interagency effort.
