From:               Assistant Director, Resources and Planning

Subject:           Request for Nominations for the Chairman’s Award for Achievement in Historic Preservation

Program Areas: All Programs

Purpose:  The purpose of this Information Bulletin (IB) is to solicit nominations from the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) field employees for the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) Chairman’s Award for Achievement in Historic Preservation.  This award recognizes projects, programs, or policies that make significant contributions to historic preservation in conjunction with a federal entity or property.

Policy/Action:  This IB instructs each office to review the criteria and determine whether they have a project, program or policy related to federal stewardship, actions, activities, or undertakings that may qualify. Nominations must meet one or more of the following criteria.

  • Exemplary project, program, or policy resulting in rehabilitation and active use of one or more historic resources.
  • Outstanding organizational leadership in historic preservation public policy, or on issues of importance to historic preservation policy.
  • Exemplary stewardship, treatment, or use of one or more historic resources.
  • Significant contributions to economic development, community revitalization, heritage tourism, education, public involvement, sustainability, and livable communities, or other public benefit through preservation activities or programs; include those that focus on youth engagement or the involvement of underserved and diverse audiences.
  • Exemplary advancement of cultural heritage programs such as America’s Great Outdoors or Preserve America.
  • Promotion of heritage tourism and historic preservation efforts that demonstrate involvement of local government and/or other partners or stakeholders, including the federal government.

Projects must be completed and programs or relevant policies must be substantially implemented before a nomination is submitted.  Nominated projects must have been completed in the last three years.  Please see the ACHP website for more information on additional nomination requirements:  http://www.achp.gov/awards.html.  Select the ACHP Chairman’s Award to download the applicable information.  Nomination materials should be submitted together in a single package, preferably electronically, however, hard copy is also acceptable.

Timeframe: Nominations are due to WO-240 by May 25, 2016, in order to meet the deadline to the ACHP of June 1, 2016.  The next Chairman’s Award will be presented in conjunction with the July 2016 ACHP business meeting in Washington, D.C.

Budget Impact: The budget impact will be minimal, requiring a modest amount of time to solicit and provide nominations.

Background: This award acknowledges noteworthy accomplishments in the promotion and advancement of the current Administration’s goals with respect to cultural and natural heritage resources and historic preservation, especially those which add benefit for the federal government and the public.  Any federal agency; state, local, or tribal government; non-profit organization; or business is eligible to receive a Chairman’s Award.  The Chairman’s Award is conferred several times a year and is not tied to a specific award cycle.  Nomination materials will be retained by the ACHP and considered for future award rounds.  For more information, see http://www.achp.gov/chairaward.html.  Previous award winners can be found at the following links.
