Information Bulletin No. 2016-019

To:                   All Washington Office and Field Office Officials
Attn:  Deputy State Directors for Resources

From:               Assistant Director, Resources and Planning

Subject:           Request for Nomination of “Heritage Heroes” in 2016                                                                                                                                 DD: 2/26/2016; 8/26/2016

The purpose of this Information Bulletin (IB) is to solicit nominations from the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) field employees, volunteers and project partners who have provided significant support to or within the cultural heritage, history, paleontological resources, tribal consultation or the museum collections programs.  The Division of Cultural, Paleontological Resources, and Tribal Consultation (WO 240) will select and publicize the Heritage Heroes’ accomplishments.

This IB instructs each state office to:

  • Submit a minimum of one nominee every six months to Division Chief, Byron Loosle, of WO 240.
  • Choose individuals or groups who are employees of the BLM, BLM volunteers, or members of partner organizations.
  • Include with the nomination package two pages describing the activity that warrants the Heritage Heroes’ recognition.
  • Provide three or four photographs showing the nominees in action.  The photographs must be acceptable for the BLM Daily, of good quality, and captioned.

The nominations and supporting documentation, including photographs, shall be forwarded to WO-240.  It is indisputable that BLM has many such heroes; the heritage program’s annual report often highlights the work of our BLM archaeologists, regional paleontologists and paleontological coordinators, tribal coordinators, and museum staff, as well as our support staff and managers.

Nominations should be directed through the Deputy State Director for Resources in each state office.  Please forward the potential hero nomination(s) to Byron Loosle, Division Chief, WO-240 at bloosle@blm.gov no later than February 26, 2016, and August 26, 2016.

The budget impact will be minimal, requiring a modest amount of time to solicit and provide nominations.  The winners will receive a modest token of appreciation for the outstanding work.

As a part of the 50th Anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act in 2016, the BLM is planning to highlight the outstanding work conducted by employees and partners who exemplify a model for preservation stewardship.  Each year, information from the heritage program’s annual report is used in various reports, provided to partner organizations and is posted on state and national websites. While focusing on the 2016 celebration, it is important to use the annual report information to share the stories of the amazing work being accomplished on behalf of the cultural heritage, history, paleontological resources, tribal consultation and the museum collections programs. This effort, to identify those “Heritage Heroes,” will publicly recognize and celebrate their accomplishments.

If you have questions, please contact Ranel Stephenson Capron, Federal Preservation Officer, at (202) 912-7241 or rcapron@blm.gov.
