Subject: Availability of Homestead Act and General Land Office Commemoration Web Pages
We are pleased to announce the availability of two new web pages commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the passage of the Homestead Act in 1862, and the 200th Anniversary of the establishment of the General Land Office (GLO) in 1812. Both events and their subsequent history are integral to the chronicles of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
The Homestead Act web page features an interactive time line and videos on homesteads in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, and New Mexico, as well as interviews with the BLM’s homesteading expert, Dr. Robert King, BLM Alaska Deputy Preservation Officer:
The GLO web page includes videos featuring a tour of today’s GLO and surveyors, in addition to the GLO timeline.
All BLM offices are encouraged to create links to these web pages as appropriate and to provide information about upcoming State commemoration events on their respective State Office web pages.
We extend our thanks to the BLM employees who contributed to the production and design of these websites. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Richard Hanes, Division Chief, Cultural, Paleontological Resources and Tribal Consultation (WO-240) at (202) 912-7240.
