Subject:  Availability of “Seymour Antelope” BLM Youth Program Mascot Costumes
DD:  02/18/2011

As announced in Information Bulletin (IB) 2010-075 on May 14, 2010, costumed character “Seymour Antelope” was selected to be the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) National Youth Program mascot.  Seymour has been the BLM-New Mexico mascot for the past few years and has achieved overwhelming success with outreach to children.  Having appeared at State fairs, parades, conferences, and various outdoor events, Seymour has been instrumental in bringing attention to the BLM in a light-hearted way, drawing public interest, and creating opportunities to engage communities about the BLM and its programs.  As Seymour goes national to serve as the BLM Youth Program mascot and all-around ambassador to our nation’s young people, “his” primary purpose will be to encourage children and families to get outside and enjoy their public lands.

We are happy to announce that four additional Seymour costumes have been completed under a contract with Costume Specialists, the Ohio-based mascot design company that produced the Seymour prototype for the New Mexico State Office.  These four costumes are now available for use by BLM field offices at local programs and events targeting youth.   The costumes are suitable for relatively trim persons who are between 5’5” and 5’9” in height.

Copies of the costume company’s management and procedures agreement will be distributed within the next few weeks, as will an e-mail order form, information on additional ordering mechanisms, the web address for the costume company’s online costume-availability calendar, and guidance regarding reservations, fees, and funding.

At this time, we would appreciate it if each State Director, as well as interested Center Directors and WO Assistant Directors, would name a contact person to be responsible for all costume orders within that State as well as costume-related coordination with the Washington Office.  A back-up contact may also be named.  Please provide this information by February 18, 2011, to Scott Owen of the Division of Education, Interpretation, and Partnerships at [email protected] or (202) 912-7432.

If your office has a need for a Seymour costume before ordering instructions and other information have been distributed, please feel free to contact Scott to make special arrangements.

Thank you for your participation in this promising new outreach initiative.
