Subject: Passport in Time Public Outreach Program

This Information Bulletin (IB) provides information on the Passport in Time (PIT) volunteer clearinghouse sponsored by the Forest Service (FS) Heritage Program. The PIT engages volunteers to accomplish heritage projects proposed and supervised by professionals in the Federal Government. Through the years, PIT has helped accomplish a wide variety of projects, including archival research, survey, resource evaluation, monitoring, restoration, documentation, curation, interpretation, and oral history.

The FS currently administers PIT through a partnership agreement with the SRI Foundation, a non-profit organization that serves as the PIT clearinghouse. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) pays a reduced administration overhead fee of $1,250 for each project. Fee payment must allow approximately 2 months from the time you submit a proposal to the time that the PIT clearinghouse completes recruitment and you select your volunteers. To assist in determining if PIT would be helpful to your office and to help plan future PIT projects, this IB forwards a PIT project manager's guidebook, a copy of the web-based project proposal form, and two recent BLM proposals from the Buffalo Field Office, in Wyoming, and the Redding Field Office, in California. Please note that the online project proposal options do not include a BLM field unit identification data element. You must communicate this information separately to the PIT clearinghouse until the online form is updated.
