Secretary Salazar tasked the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to implement important portions of President Obama’s New Energy for America agenda. The BLM is working collaboratively with partners and stakeholders to achieve timely and environmentally responsible development of renewable energy. This includes utility scale solar and wind energy projects and the long-distance, high-voltage transmission lines needed to integrate these energy sources into the electric grid. Implementation actions are already underway, including establishing Renewable Energy Coordination Offices (RECO), internal and external coordination among BLM state offices and stakeholders, and intrastate initiatives. The BLM plans to convene a Renewable Energy Summit to further discuss these implementation actions. This Energy Summit is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of August 31 through the morning of September 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Summit will provide BLM managers and staff an opportunity to interact with panels of experts and to share knowledge and tools to address the unique issues posed by renewable energy development. It is important that state and field offices identify critical topics and issues they wish to be included in the Summit agenda. Field and district managers are expected to participate and are requested to provide names of additional participants from their offices. We anticipate these will include assistant district and field managers for Resources, project managers involved with renewable energy projects (wind, solar, and transmission), and core teams from RECO. Managers for the state offices are also encouraged to attend. Costs of travel and attendance will be covered by reprogrammed RECO funds.
