Subject: New Brochure Available: Split Estate: Cultural Resources Requirements on Private Surface – Federal Minerals for Oil and Gas Development (2008)

The new brochure, Split Estate: Cultural Resources Requirements on Private Surface-Federal Minerals, is intended for private surface owners. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) fluid minerals and cultural staff and oil and gas operators are encouraged to provide the brochure to split estate surface owners to help explain cultural resource requirements. There will be an initial distribution to those Field Offices that have the highest volume of Applications for Permit to Drill on private surface-federal minerals lands.

Extra copies are available from the BLM’s Printed Materials Distribution Services (PMDS). Refer to Stock Number P-453A. A partially prefilled order form is attached for your convenience. Please place orders through the administrative assistant in your office who is designated to order forms and brochures from PMDS. The brochure is also available on the web at: www.blm.gov/bmp/Split_Estate.htm together with the first brochure in the split estate series Split Estate: Rights, Responsibilities, and Opportunities (P-453).

This joint venture between WO-240 and WO-310 was initiated by a work group of the BLM Preservation Board led by Gary Smith, Deputy Preservation Officer BLM Montana and
Tim Nowak, former DPO BLM Wyoming. Other team members were Dan Haas, DPO, BLM Colorado, Glenn Carpenter, District Manager, West Desert District, Lynn Harrell, Archaeologist, Kemmerer Field Office, Wyoming, Megg Heath, Education Project Manager, and Kate Winthrop, former BLM Preservation Officer. We also want to acknowledge the work of Jennifer Kapus of the National Operations Center, who designed the brochure.

If you have any questions, please contact Robin Burgess, Preservation Officer (WO-240) at 202-785-6581 or robin_burgess@blm.gov or Jim Perry, Senior Natural Resource Specialist (WO-310) at 202-452-5063 or jim_perry@blm.gov.
