Subject: Publication and Availability of Planning & Managing Environmentally Friendly Mountain Bike Trails under Shamano America Bureauwide
Memorandum of Understanding

Under separate cover you will soon receive a copy of a newly published guide book completed in partnership under a Bureauwide Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the Shamano Corporation, and the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Education Science Unit. This guide book provides recommended practices for design and management of mountain bike trails as well as methodologies for selected impact data collection and monitoring.

The subject publication is not intended to be used as a one-size-fits-all cookbook but should be used as a reference guide to assist in developing local management strategies. The guide’s suggested assessment and monitoring techniques can also be used to generate science-based data for use in National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation regarding mountain bike trail management decisions.

This project was based on actions in the BLM’s National Mountain Bicycling Strategic Action Plan (November 2002) for improving on-the-ground management and promoting good stewardship.

Planning & Managing Environmentally Friendly Mountain Bike Trails, summarizes the current research and provides for basic mountain bike trail system management as well as summarizes management practices that have had success in other locations.

Copies of the publication are being distributed through the State Office Recreation Program Leads to each Field Office.
