Subject: 27th Annual National Association of Recreation Resource Planners Conference and Call for Presentations DD: 3/2/2007

Program Area: Partnerships, Recreation and Visitor Services

Purpose: This Information Bulletin (IB) announces the 27th Annual National Association of Recreation Resource Planners (NARRP) Conference during
May 6 – 10, 2007 in Austin, Texas.
Policy/Action: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been invited to take a more active role in the NARRP including their 2007 Conference. Specifically, the BLM has been asked to submit proposals for presentation and to attend the Conference. Their call for presentations, Attachment 1, provides information on the subjects consistent with the 2007 Conference theme, and instructions for submitting proposals.
Time Frame: Proposals for presentation should be submitted to Dr. Glenn Haas by March 2, 2007.
Budget Impact: The impact to the BLM budget is conference fees and travel expenditures to be paid by the participant’s home office.
Background: The NARRP is an organization comprised of outdoor recreation professionals and others interested in recreation resource planning. It is a nationwide organization with members in nearly every state, representing state and federal agencies, land managers, consultants, and academic institutions. The mission of NARRP is to advance the art, the science and the profession of recreation resource planning and enhance the provision of recreation opportunities for all Americans. Their website (http://www.narrp.org/index.html) provides additional information about the organization.
The annual NARRP national conference is the premier annual conference that uniquely focuses on the topic of outdoor recreation planning. The goal of the annual NARRP planning conference is to help facilitate the interagency exchange of best practices among local, state, and federal agencies, and the private and non-profit sectors. Attachment 2 briefly describes the May 6 – 10, 2007 Conference in Austin, Texas. More information will be forthcoming and will be posted at the NARRP Website: http://www.narrp.org/conference/index.html
As the NARRP seeks broader BLM and other federal agency involvement, they have invited each federal agency to assign a staff member as an ex-officio liaison to their Board of Directors. Hal Hallett is currently representing the BLM in this capacity. In developing their outreach to the BLM, the NARRP prepared a series of questions for consideration. These questions are listed in Attachment 3 and each member of your staff who has an interest in recreation planning and visitor services is invited to respond as indicated in the attachment.
Directives Affected: None.

Coordination: This IB was coordinated with the NARRP, the Assistant Director for Renewable Resources and Planning, and the Director, Office of National Landscape Conservation System.
Contact: Hal Hallett, Division of Recreation and Visitor Services, Bureau of Land Management, 1849 C Street, N.W., MS 302 LS, Washington, D.C. 20240; telephone: (202) 452-7794; fax: (202) 452-7709; e-mail: hal_hallett@blm.gov.
