Subject: BLM’s 2006 “Excellence in Interpretation or Environmental Education” Awards: Announcement of Winners

We are pleased to announce the selection of four winners in BLM’s 2006 “Excellence in Interpretation or Environmental Education” Awards competition. They are:

GOLD AWARD winner: Tracy Albrecht, Interpretive Specialist, Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, North Palm Springs, CA, for her work in developing educational and public outreach programs, a model interpretive plan, a documentary film and a children’s book, all which greatly enhance the public’s awareness of the BLM’s cultural and natural resources.
SILVER AWARD winner: Jeff Brune, Manager, Campbell Creek Science Center, Anchorage, AK, for his leadership and innovation in the development of the Get Energized! energy education program that includes an interactive kiosk, CD-ROM with Educator’s Guide and web-based version.
SILVER AWARD winner: Jay Moeller, Chief Park Ranger, Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (YHONA), Newport, OR, for developing a wide range of thematic based interpretive programs, products and projects that have taken YHONA to a new level of creativity and excellence.
SILVER AWARD winner: Tracy Rowland, Project Manager for the San Joaquin River Gorge, Bakersfield, CA, for her dedicated work in developing a variety of cultural heritage and natural resource education programs, including the CA version of the “Get Energized!” energy program, and leadership in the development of the San Joaquin River Gorge “Hands on the Land” field classroom.

Each of this year’s winners has demonstrated exceptional work with partners and communities to create meaningful interpretive and/or educational experiences for public lands users. They were selected from a slate of BLM nominees by a review panel comprised of BLM staff and partner-group representatives.

Our GOLD and SILVER winners have been invited to an awards ceremony on November 9, 2006, to be held in conjunction with the National Association for Interpretation’s (NAI) 2006 National Interpreters Workshop. This year’s workshop will be held November 6-10, 2006, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Winners of the U.S. Forest Service’s Gifford Pinchot Award, the National Park Service’s Freeman Tilden Award, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hiram M. Chittenden Award, and NAI’s Master Interpreter Award will also be acknowledged during this ceremony.

Congratulations to our award winners and thanks to all who participated in this year’s awards competition. Should you have any questions, please call Mary Tisdale of the Education and Volunteers Division at (202) 452-0365 or Amy Galperin, BLM’s Lead for Interpretation, at (303) 239-3960.
