Information Bulletin No. AK-2007-009

To: All Employees

From: State Director

Subject: 2007 Fire Training Bulletin and Alaska Fire Service (AFS) Training Contacts

The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to inform you that the 2007 Alaska Fire Training Bulletin can be found on the web at: http://fire.ak.blm.gov/content/training/bulletin.pdf. National and other geographic area related Interagency Wildland Fire Training information can be found at: http://nationalfiretraining.net.

Mandated by the 2001 Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy, “Agency administrators will ensure that their employees are trained, certified, and made available to participate in the wildland fire program locally, regionally, and nationally as the situation demands. Employees with operational, administrative, or other skills will support the wildland fire program as necessary. Agency administrators are responsible and will be held accountable for making employees available.”

Many of the support positions in short supply are not arduous, nor do they require excessive training. What they do require is some commitment from individuals and their supervisor to be made available for one or two 14-day assignments per year. Employees who are funded under Management of Lands and Resources (MLR) may, when assigned to a fire, code all of their time to the suppression subactivity (2821).

A series of orientations and entry-level training will occur in Anchorage February 26 through March 2. The Fire Training Staff at AFS can assist employees with a specific development plan to help fill this need.

Questions should be addressed to the Fire Training Section Chief, Tony Doty, 907-356-5630, or the Training Operations Manager, Lynn Standley Coe, 907-356-5632; or email: AFS_Fire_Training@ak.blm.gov.
