Wyoming Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Events in September

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Bureau of Land Management Wyoming announces wild horse and burro adoptions occurring in September. Untrained animals will be offered to qualified adopters at the following in-person adoptions for a $125 minimum fee: 

  • Sept. 5, Wind River Wild Horse Ranch: approximately 20 untrained horses will be available, untrained burros may be available. Adoptions on a first-come, first-served basis, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

  • Sept. 11-12, Wyoming Honor Farm: approximately 46 halter and saddle started horses and burros. Open 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday with the live auction at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.  

  • Adoption applications must be submitted half an hour before the auction. 

  • Review Wyoming Honor Farm visitor expectations prior to the adoption. 

  • Preview the horses and burros online prior to the event.  

  • Sept. 26, Deerwood Open Ranch Days: approximately 20 untrained horses will be available for adoption or sale. Event opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. 

If you would like to participate in the auction, you will need to submit an Adoption application for approval on-site or have it completed and approved beforehand at the Wild Horse and Burro Online Corral. Potential adopters are encouraged to complete and receive approval for their adoption application online before the event to confirm they are qualified and reduce wait times. Previously approved applications are valid for one year. Because the auction is held at a correctional facility with restricted internet access, please bring a hard copy of your approved application to the event. Individuals with an approved application will receive a bidder number. Successful bidders must complete a Private Maintenance and Care Agreement before loadout.

Please note: Horses and burros selected for the Honor Farm adoption event are not available for adoption prior to the event. In accordance with 43 CFR § 4750.4-2, animals selected for competitive adoption must be offered through the scheduled adoption event, ensuring a fair and transparent opportunity for all interested adopters.

Each of the wild horses and burros available for adoption have been removed from overpopulated herds roaming Western public rangelands.
