Event Description

CRAIG, Colo. – The Horse Draw fire was reported June 26 at approximately 1:50PM and is burning north of U.S. Highway 40 near mile post 20 in the Horse Draw and Three Springs areas.

As of 7:30 p.m. June 26, the Horse Draw Fire was mapped at 801 acres in size and is burning in grass, sagebrush, pinyon and juniper. Due to extreme fire behavior and rapid rates of spread, U.S. Highway 40 was closed for a time yesterday afternoon as fire and smoke impaired visibility creating a hazard on the roadway for both the public and the wildland firefighters working on the incident. U.S. Highway 40 was reopened at 10 p.m.  Similar warm dry weather is forecast for the fire area today. There are more than 70 firefighters from hotshot crews, wildland fire modules, helicopters, and local BLM and Moffat County engines that are currently battling the fire on the ground and in the air. The fire is currently all on BLM White River Field Office managed lands.

Please use caution when traveling U.S. Highway 40 around the fire for the safety of the wildland firefighting resources working on the incident in the area.
