MOAB, Utah — The Bureau of Land Management seeks public comment on a draft environmental assessment to maintain and designate backcountry airstrips in the Canyon Country District in southeast Utah as open for use by aircraft only. Backcountry airstrips support effective management of public lands and enhanced recreation opportunities for the public.

The proposed airstrips were previously constructed most commonly to support mining activity and, while not specifically authorized, have been in sporadic use for recreation since the 1950s. Five of the proposed backcountry airstrips are in the Moab Field Office and include Big Flat, Playa, Potato Ridge, Spring Canyon, and Steer Ridge. Four of the proposed backcountry airstrips are in the Monticello Field Office and include Castle Creek, Nokai Dome, Piute, and Red Canyon. A tenth airstrip, the Wee Hope Airstrip on designated route D0025, would be maintained to a width that would accommodate parking and turning around of aircraft.

Additional information is available at the BLM National NEPA Register, where comments may be submitted through the “Participate Now” option until Sept. 3, 2026.
