Event Description
LINCOLN COUNTY, N.M. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Roswell Field Office invites the public to a Freedom 250 event at the Valley of Fires Recreation Area in March to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday this year.
The event will be held at Junior Ranger Days at Valley of Fires Recreation Area in Carrizozo, N.M., on March 13 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The recreation area is located immediately adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow, which developed about 5,000 years ago after Little Black Peak erupted and flowed 44 miles into the Tularosa Basin. When the lava cooled, it became porous black rock and home to a variety of wildlife and plants. For the Junior Ranger Days, BLM staff will be on-site to help visitors explore the lava flow, the trails, and the plants and animals that call the lava flow home. As visitors explore, they can complete a Junior Ranger booklet and earn their very own Junior Ranger badge. For more information about the Junior Ranger program, please visit the Junior Range Program page.
The BLM encourages visitors to wear sturdy footwear, dress in layers, and bring water, snacks and sunscreen.
“There are so many great opportunities to find recreation on BLM lands in southeastern New Mexico,” said NCA Manager Warren Kasper. “Valley of Fires and the National Conservation Area are the perfect places to highlight the fascinating and exciting experiences available on BLM lands. We are looking forward for visitors to get to know their public lands better as part of Freedom 250.”
The Roswell Field Office plans more Freedom 250 events throughout the year and will make more announcements in the weeks leading up to events. Freedom 250 is the national, nonpartisan organization leading the celebration of our nation’s birthday. Events will take place around the country that honor our history, showcase the beauty of the United States, ignite innovation, and strengthen the faith that will carry our nation forward for the next 250 years.
