BLM reduces fire restrictions across parts of Colorado
Montrose/Cañon City, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management is reducing fire restrictions from Stage 2 to Stage 1 on BLM-administered public lands in four Colorado field offices. Stage 1 restrictions take effect Aug. 21 in the Uncompahgre and Gunnison field offices and took effect Aug. 18 in the Royal Gorge and San Luis Valley field offices.
Under Stage 1 fire restrictions, campfires are allowed only in agency-provided fire grates at developed recreation sites. Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles or buildings, developed recreation sites or areas cleared of flammable materials. Chainsaws, welding and torches must meet specific fire-safety requirements, and exploding targets are prohibited.
Stage 1 restrictions are in addition to year-round wildfire prevention requirements, which prohibit unattended or unextinguished fires, fireworks, incendiary or tracer ammunition, burning hazardous or explosive materials, and operating off-road vehicles without required spark arresters.
Visitors are encouraged to remain cautious with fire and take steps to prevent human-caused wildfires while recreating on public lands. Fire restrictions may be adjusted as conditions change.
