BLM Approves Emergency Stabilization for Flood-Damaged Buckhorn Wash Roadway

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has completed a Categorical Exclusion (CX) for the Buckhorn Wash Emergency Stabilization Project (DOI-BLM-UT-G020-2026-0013-CX). This action authorizes emergency measures to address significant roadway damage caused by recent flooding events.

Multiple flooding events within Buckhorn Wash have damaged the existing roadway at the Furniture Draw area and other lower water crossings. These impacts have reduced accessibility to several campsites and cultural resources that provide educational value for public enjoyment. The CX ensures that stabilization efforts can proceed promptly to restore safe access and protect valuable public resources.

The CX can be viewed at the following ePlanning website. https://eplanning.blm.gov/Project-Home/?id=47764DF3-A7F2-F011-8407-001DD80C29F3

Canyon Fuel Company Authorized for Coal Exploration Drilling in Manti-La Sal National Forest

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has completed a Categorical Exclusion (CX) for the Canyon Fuel Company, LLC (CFC) Exploration Project (DOI-BLM-UT-G020-2026-0015-CX). This CX authorizes exploration activities proposed by CFC outside of their existing federal coal leases in Sevier and Sanpete counties within the Manti-La Sal National Forest.

CFC currently operates the Sufco Mine under federal coal leases and seeks to conduct exploration in adjacent areas, which requires an exploration license under 43 CFR 3410. The project includes drilling 10 exploration holes—6 conventional track-mounted holes and 4 helicopter-assisted drill sites—resulting in approximately 2.1 acres of temporary disturbance.

The CX ensures that exploration can proceed in compliance with federal regulations while minimizing environmental impacts. The CX can be viewed at the following ePlanning website: https://eplanning.blm.gov/Project-Home/?id=52764DF3-A7F2-F011-8407-001DD80C29F3
