Event Description
Ready to meet your newest furry friend? Join the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 3 at Northern Arizona Riding Stables in Flagstaff to give a good home to your own wild horse or burro. The location is a 1/2 mile from the Interstate 17 and six miles from the Interstate 40.
There will be untrained and trained wild horses and burros available. Throughout the three-day event, all untrained animals are $125 on a first come, first served basis.
In partnership with Arizona Correctional Industries, some available animals have been gentled and trained by inmates. There will be a demonstration of these trained animals at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 1 followed by an auction at 12 p.m. Trained burros start at $500, and trained horses start at $1,000. After the auction, any trained animals will be available on a first come, first served basis.
All animals available have been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, de-wormed, and have a current negative Coggins test.
The BLM offers wild horses and burros gathered from public lands in the west to qualified individuals who must show humane care for the animal. Wild horses and burros are known for their sure-footedness, strength, intelligence, and endurance. With kindness and patience, these animals can be trained for many uses.
Interested adopters can apply online prior to the event through the BLM’s Online Corral. To qualify to adopt/purchase, you must be 18 years of age, have approved facilities to keep the animal(s), and proper transportation home for the animal(s) from the event site. BLM staff will load each animal into a BLM-approved trailer provided by the adopter.
For more information and adoption/purchase qualifications, call the BLM at 1-866-4MUSTANGS (1-866-468-7826) or visit the Florence Off-Range Facility webpage.
