KINGMAN, Ariz. — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service (USWFS), in cooperation with the Pinion Pine Fire District, Pine Lake Fire District, Mohave County Parks, and Mohave County Emergency Management, plan to conduct prescribed fire treatments from late October through Dec. 31, as weather, fuel and air quality conditions allow. Operations are planned near the community of Pine Lake, Hualapai Mountain Park, the Potato Patch and Getz Peak communication sites, and BLM's Wild Cow Springs Campground. These carefully planned treatments will reduce hazardous fuels, help protect nearby communities and improve the health of public lands.  Information about specific upcoming and active burns is available online.

To ensure the safety of residents and visitors, USWFS fire personnel will conduct prescribed fire only when weather, fuel and air quality conditions meet established parameters. Fire personnel use natural features and constructed control lines to help keep fire within planned treatment areas and take steps to minimize smoke impacts on nearby communities. Smoke management will follow Arizona Department of Environmental Quality regulations.

What the public should know:

  • Smoke may be visible during operations and may settle in low-lying areas overnight.
  • Nearby residents are encouraged to close windows if smoke affects their area.
  • Motorists encountering smoke should slow down and use headlights.
  • People with heart or lung conditions or other smoke sensitivities should monitor local air quality and follow guidance from their health care providers.
  • Access to the treatment area may be temporarily restricted for public safety.
