Active fire warrants emergency closure of certain BLM lands and waters

Moro, Oregon — The BLM has announced a temporary closure of certain public lands and waters in Sherman and Gilliam Counties, effective immediately, in response to an active fire in the area. This closure is necessary to minimize conflicts with emergency response teams and to facilitate fire suppression efforts.

The following BLM-managed lands and waters are included in this closure:

  • The John Day River from the J.S. Burress Park Boat Ramp to Tumwater Falls.
  • All BLM lands within a 2-mile radius of the John Day River from Ferry Canyon (approximately River Mile 54) downstream to the mouth of the river at I-84.

This temporary closure will remain in effect until conditions allow for safe public access. All uses within the specified area are strictly prohibited.

Certain individuals are exempt from these closures, including:

  1. Federal, State, or Local Officers and emergency personnel engaged in fire, law enforcement, or emergency activities.
  2. BLM employees and contractors performing official duties.
  3. Individuals acting within the scope of their official governmental duties.
  4. Holders of valid existing rights for access (such as permittees or lease holders).
  5. Parties possessing written approval from the BLM Authorized Officer for access to the closed areas.

Violations of this closure may lead to prosecution before a United States Magistrate, fines under 18 U.S.C. 3571, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both. Vehicles found in violation may also be removed.

This closure order is effective immediately upon signature dated June 12, 2025.
