Accessibility Description (ABA/ADA)

This site is 25 miles northwest of the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum.

The parking lot can accommodate approximately a dozen vehicles if they parallel park. The gravel surface of the lot should be suitable for mobility device users, but there is a designated accessible parking space at the trailhead for an accessible trail.

A double vault toilet sits next to the parking area, reached by a flat gravel path where there is also a trash receptacle. The toilet has a wide entrance and handrails near the commode, but the door to the toilet, which is a heavy, self-closing door, may be challenging for visitors who use mobility devices or who have stability impairments.

Nearby is an information kiosk with a registration book and brochures about the site. There are also 5 picnic areas with picnic tables with extended ends that can accommodate wheelchair users.

A ¼-mile-long natural surface trail leads to the Pueblo or Great House and the large kiva. The trail is about 3 feet wide and much of it has a slope of 5 percent or less, thanks to the use of switchbacks. However, parts of the trail may have a steeper grade.

Along the trail visitors will find a bench without arms and angled interpretive signs, and the trail’s flat, compacted-gravel surface can easily accommodate wheelchair users near the kiva and Great House. Some of the interpretive panels around the Great House are set back from the path and may be challenging to access for some visitors. In addition, the steps at the access point to the double kiva inside the Great House may present a challenge to mobility device users.

Cell phone reception at this site is good.
