Accessibility Description (ABA/ADA)

View images of accessibility features in a new window.

Cell phone reception outside the Center can be spotty, depending on your carrier. A Wi-Fi signal is available inside the building.

The paved parking lot has 66 spaces, 5 of which are designated as accessible with access aisles for vans. Curb cuts provide a transition from the lot to the concrete sidewalk near the accessible parking spaces and to the walkway in front of the building.

This walkway leads to an interpretive plaza with wide paths surfaced in pavers, which may be uneven in places. The plaza features multiple bronze statues, angled interpretive panels, and quote stones.

A wooden bench without arms sits next to the building entrance, which is equipped with a push-button-operated electric door opener.

Inside the Interpretive Center, an accessible drinking fountain and bottle-filling station are mounted on the wall near the entrance to the restrooms. There are 3 restrooms (multi-stall Men’s and Women’s, and single Unisex) with a total of 9 flush toilets. Each restroom has 1 accessible stall and at least 1 wheelchair-accessible sink.

The spacious Interpretive Center has more than 100 signs viewable by visitors in wheelchairs. It also contains more than 30 accessible exhibits, in addition to those outside in the interpretive plaza. Inside the building, audio recordings play on a loop, providing interpretation for many of the exhibits as visitors pass through them.

Visitors can also activate recordings at 16 listening stations by pressing a button. The recordings, which can be printed out, supplement the information provided on the interpretive signs. Several exhibits are tactile, allowing visitors to touch topographical maps and build with Lincoln logs, for example.

A film about Native American experiences runs continuously in the Donner Theater, where there are fixed benches and ample room for wheelchairs, unless the theater is crowded. The film has audio as well as video.

A gravel hiking trail outside the Center was not designed to be accessible; however, the first 1/4 mile of the trail is wide with a moderate grade and a well-packed surface during the drier summer months. Past this initial section the trail becomes narrower, with a steeper grade and softer surface.
