BLM Utah Fire Restrictions

The Bureau of Land Management implements fire restrictions to prevent losses from human-caused wildfires brought on by extreme drought, high fire danger conditions, and the increased use of public lands. The BLM asks the public to use their Fire Sense to help prevent human-caused wildfires.

Statewide Fire Prevention Orders

[UPDATED JUNE 2025] BLM Fire Prevention Order

Prohibited Acts from June 18 until rescinded:

  1. The use/discharge of explosives of any kind, incendiary or chemical devices, pyrotechnic devices, exploding targets, pressurized containers or canisters, and binary explosives.
  2. The use/discharge of any kind of fireworks as defined by this order.
Canyon Country

Fire Prevention Order: UTCYD-00000-25-01

Prohibited Acts from June 28 until rescinded:

  1. Campfires using charcoal, solid fuels, or any ash-producing fuel, except in permanently constructed cement or metal fire pits located in agency developed campgrounds and picnic areas. Examples of solid fuels include, but are not limited to wood, charcoal, peat, coal, hexamine fuel tablets, wood pellets, corn, wheat, rye, and other grains. Devices fueled by petroleum or liquid petroleum gas with a shut-off valve are approved in all locations if there is at least three feet in diameter that is barren with no flammable vegetation.
  2. Smoking except within an enclosed vehicle, covered areas, developed recreation site or while stopped in a cleared area of at least three feet in diameter that is barren with no flammable vegetation.
  3. Grinding, cutting, and welding of metal.
  4. Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained and in effective working order as determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommended practices J335 and J350. Refer to Title 43 CFR 8343.1.

Permissible Acts

  1. Use of devices fueled by petroleum or liquid petroleum gas with a shut-off valve in all locations.
  2. Use of campfires in permanently constructed cement or metal fire pits provided in agency developed campgrounds and picnic areas.
  3. Charcoal use along riverways must be set in metal pans or grills in areas clear of flammable vegetation.

West Desert

Fire Prevention Order UTW002-2025-01

Prohibited Acts from June 18 until Rescinded: 

  1. Use of any steel component ammunition of any caliber.
  2. Use of any steel component target.
  3. Use of any tracer or incendiary ammunition of any caliber.
  4. Use of any Sky Lanterns, Chinese Lanterns, Fire Balloons, Acetylene Balloons, or similar device.
  5. Use of any Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) that is not equipped with a properly installed and maintained spark arrestor. Spark arresters shall meet the 80 percent efficiency level standard when determined by the appropriate Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommended practices J335 and J350. Refer to Title 43 CFR §8343.1.

 

Fire Prevention Order UTW002-2025-02

Prohibited Acts from June 28 until Rescinded:

  1. Trash or refuse fires between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. are prohibited, except in containers equipped with spark arresters and located in areas with a cleared diameter of at least 20 feet free of vegetation.
  2. Building or using any campfire or open fire—including charcoal, wood, or other ash-producing solid fuels—is prohibited except within agency-provided fire grates/pits at developed campgrounds. Also exempt are enclosed stoves and grills using pressurized liquid or gas, provided they are within a cleared area with a diameter of at least six feet free of vegetation.
  3. Use of acetylene cutting torches or electric arc welders is prohibited, except in areas with a cleared diameter of at least 20 feet free of vegetation.
  4. Smoking cigarettes is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, building, developed recreation site, or while stopped in a cleared area with a diameter of at least six feet free of vegetation.
  5. Operating a chainsaw is prohibited without a properly installed USDA- or SAE-approved spark arresting device, along with a five-pound fire extinguisher and a shovel.

Permissible Acts:

  1. Propane or open fire branding activities in cleared areas ten feet in radius.
