KANAB, Utah — Starting Dec. 14 and throughout the holiday season, citizen scientists will once again fan out across America to help the National Audubon Society conduct a winter-bird census, more commonly called the Christmas Bird Count. For more than a century, this community science project has become an annual tradition for many, resulting in valuable community-based scientific data collection for the National Audubon Society, which is then made available to researchers.

Locally, the Kanab Field Office and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument staff will help carry on that tradition by hosting Kanab’s very own local Christmas Bird Count, which supports the Audubon’s 121st Christmas Bird Count this year. Nationally, the Christmas Bird Count occurs annually from Dec. 14 to Jan. 5. Locally, the dates, times and locations vary. See attached poster for details.

Please note that for everyone’s safety, the Audubon has developed guidelines so that participants may enjoy a safe and socially-distanced bird count. Guidelines include:

  • Please be sure to comply with all current state and municipal COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Count forms may be emailed to lchurch@blm.gov or mailed to 669 S. Hwy 89A, Kanab, UT 84741.
  • If returning count forms in person, please remember to wear your facemask.

Have fun and keep it simple! Counters may participate directly from the convenience of their backyard.
