Statewide, Idaho - As school gets out and families start their road trips this holiday weekend, fire managers across Idaho are asking you to take precautions when you embark on that epic summer vacation!

“We are asking the public to be extremely vigilant when out recreating this holiday weekend,” said BLM Idaho State Fire Management Officer Mike Morcom. “Because last winter was so mild, we are already seeing grass and brush fires in southern Idaho. We are asking folks to please take all safety precaution to keep from starting a wildfire.”

Before leaving, make sure your vehicle and trailers are properly maintained; the safety chain is not dragging, wheel bearings are well greased, and tires are inflated to the proper level to help prevent a blowout. Sparks can be thrown from a vehicle/trailer and cause roadside fires without the driver knowing.

The devastating effects of an escaped campfire can last for many years, so please completely extinguish your campfire before you leave. Currently, NO fire restrictions are in effect but always KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! Know before you go tips are listed at https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/know-before-you-go.

On May 10, 2018, acting BLM Idaho State Director Peter J. Ditton issued a Fire Prevention Order making it a misdemeanor to carry, discharge or otherwise use fireworks/exploding targets on BLM-managed lands.  Violations of the order may bring fines and jail time, and violators who start wildfires can also be liable for the costs of damage and suppression.

Sparks from steel core/steel jacketed fragments can cause vegetation fires as much as lead core/copper jacketed and solid copper jackets fragments. When enjoying recreational shooting, please be proactive and take precautionary measures by clearing all flammable materials and rocks away from the target area, and make sure to have fire safety equipment on hand (shovel, fire extinguisher and/or water).
