DOLORES, Colo. – On Sept. 21, the Four Corners Lecture Series features Marietta Eaton’s talk entitled “The Wetherill Legacy” at 1 p.m. at the Anasazi Heritage Center in Dolores, Colo.

The Wetherill family is known for significant archeological discoveries in the Southwest including finding the “Baskemakers” and recognizing them as a predecessor to the Cliff Dwellers.  Eaton is a descendant of the Wetherill’s and the manager of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and the Anasazi Heritage Center. She brings a fresh perspective into her pioneering family from the Four Corners area.

“My family could be considered mavericks or downright thieves, and my lecture will disclose the networks in which they operated during this period of archeological discovery in of the southwest,” said Eaton.

The lecture features highlights from Wetherill’s discoveries in the late 1800s along with insight into large-scale expeditions including the F. V. Hayden in the Rockies and Wyoming, the J. W. Powell Expedition on the Colorado River and the Hemenway Expedition of the Southwest.

Prior to managing Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Eaton served three years as the as the Science Advisor for the Bureau of Land Management’s National Conservation Lands in Washington, D.C., and was the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Assistant Monument Manager for Cultural and Earth Sciences for 12 years.
