FARMINGTON, N.M. – The Bureau of Land Management announces that it is seeking public nominations for four positions on its Northern New Mexico Resource Advisory Council (RAC), which advises the BLM on public land issues within the Farmington District and Rio Puerco Field Office. As advertised in the Federal Register, the BLM will consider nominations until June 1, 2021.

The Northern New Mexico RAC, composed of citizens chosen for their expertise in natural resource issues, helps the BLM carry out its stewardship of more than 3 million acres of public lands. The RAC consists of 12 members with an interest or expertise in public land management, including such individuals as conservationists, ranchers, outdoor recreationists, state and local government officials, Tribal officials, and academics. The membership of the RAC helps ensure that BLM land managers get varying perspectives to achieve their mission, which is to manage the public lands for multiple use. Learn more about the RAC at https://www.blm.gov/get-involved/resource-advisory-council.

“The BLM Resource Advisory Councils serves as a forum for the community conversation, which is a component of public land management,” said BLM Farmington District Manager Al Elser. “RAC members provide a valuable service to the Bureau by delving into topics and proposing solutions on a wide variety of land and resource use issues.”

Individuals may nominate themselves or others to serve on an advisory council. Nominees, who must be residents of the State of New Mexico, will be selected based on their training, education, and knowledge of the RAC’s geographical area. Nominees should also demonstrate a commitment to consensus building and collaborative decision-making. All nominations must be accompanied by letters of reference from any represented interests or organizations, a completed RAC application, and any other information that speaks to the nominee’s qualifications. This is the second call for nominations. If you have already applied in 2020, you do not need to reapply.

The Northern New Mexico RAC is soliciting applications for one vacancy in Category One, two positions in Category Two, and one position in Category Three. Members are appointed for 3-year terms. The categories represent the following interests:

  • Category One – Public land ranchers and representatives of organizations associated with energy and mineral development, the timber industry, transportation or rights-of-way, off-highway vehicle use, and commercial recreation.

  • Category Two – Representatives of nationally or regionally recognized environmental organizations, archaeological and historical organizations, dispersed recreation activities, and wild horse and burro organizations.

  • Category Three – Representatives of state, county, or local elected office.
