LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Secretary of the Interior is proposing to withdraw lands to protect the scenic and recreational values in the Upper Colorado River Special Recreation Management Area for a new 20-year period. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) requested the withdrawal of 12,437 acres of public land and 940 acres of reserved Federal mineral interest. The area was previously protected from mineral entry under Public Land Order No. 7466, which expired October 15, 2020.

The Upper Colorado River Special Recreation Management Area is heavily used by visitors for camping, hiking, fishing, float boating, and wildlife viewing. A new withdrawal is necessary to protect the river corridor’s natural setting, wildlife, fishery, and geology, and allow for continued access to outstanding recreation opportunities. The area supports hundreds of jobs directly related to recreation and draws more than 135,000 visitors each year.

A Notice of Proposed Withdrawal was published on July 1, 2022 in the Federal Register, which initiates a 90-day public comment period. A virtual public meeting is scheduled for August 17, 2022 at 6 p.m.

The public may submit comments until September 29, 2022. should be sent to: Bureau of Land Management, Attn: Colorado State Director, 2850 Youngfield Street, Lakewood, CO 80215.

Before including your address, phone number, e-mail address, or other personal identifying information in your comment, you should be aware that your entire comment – including your personal identifying information – may be made publicly available at any time. While you can ask in your comment to withhold your personal identifying information from public review, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.
