MEEKER, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management is now seeking public comment on analysis for a comprehensive non-motorized trail network near Meeker.

The Meeker Trails Master Plan Environmental Assessment is available for review at the White River Field Office in Meeker and online at: http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/wrfo.html.

The BLM and Eastern Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation and Park District propose to construct up to six new trails of approximately 12 miles open to pedestrian and bicycle use.  The trails are planned for BLM-managed lands adjacent to Meeker in an area known as China Wall.  The trails will complete connection between Phillip and Dorcas Jensen Memorial and Ute Parks.

“We hope to address public needs of current and future generations with this project,” said Aaron Grimes, BLM outdoor recreation planner.  “We are working together with the Meeker community to expand recreational opportunities adjacent to town and we again need to hear from the public on our plan to do that.”

Project plans are designed for flexibility in trail development to account for available funding, maintenance capacities and evolving public needs and demands.  Meeker area residents responding to a 2011 study identified additional trails, trail maintenance and trail improvement as the highest priorities for outdoor recreation.

Comments regarding this proposal can be mailed to Aaron Grimes, White River Field Office, 220 E. Market St., Meeker, CO 81641 or submitted via email to agrimes@blm.gov. Comments would be most helpful if received by Feb. 4, 2015.
