KANAB, Utah — The Bureau of Land Management seeks nominations for the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Advisory Committee to fill existing and upcoming vacancies. The citizen-based committee makes recommendations to the BLM that address public land management issues, such as the development and implementation of resource management plans to help protect, restore and enhance objects and values within the Monument. The advisory committee is formally chartered under the Federal Advisory Committee Act and the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976.

“Monument Advisory Committees serve an important role in the Bureau’s collaborative approach to monument management by providing the BLM with vital feedback on current issues, concerns and proposals and enable us to engage local communities and stakeholders to improve management of public lands,” said Paria River District Manager Harry Barber. “Our goal is to ensure our committee membership encompasses a wide variety of perspectives and backgrounds to guide our work as effectively as possible.”

Individuals may nominate themselves or others to serve on the advisory committees. Nominees will be reviewed based on their training, education and knowledge of the geographical area. Nominees should also demonstrate a commitment to building consensus and to a collaborative decision-making process. All nominations from represented interests or organizations must include a completed application, letters of reference and other information that speak to the nominee’s qualifications.

This year, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is seeking nominations for an elected official from Garfield County; an elected official from Kane County; a representative associated with outfitter and guide operations within the Monument; a livestock grazing permittee operating within the Monument; and representatives with expertise in two of the following scientific disciplines: archaeology; history/social science; botany/wildlife; or systems ecology.

More information about the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Advisory Committee is available on the website.  As published in a notice in the Federal Register, the BLM will consider nominations submitted for 30 days until Nov. 4, 2022.
