WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wenatchee Field Office is seeking a K-12 teacher from a local community for the Teachers on Public Lands (TPL) summer internship program. TPL teachers spend a portion of their summer working and learning at the BLM Wenatchee Field Office, doing various interest-based tasks and meeting the needs of the local area.

During their summer break, the selected teacher will:

  • Provide a minimum of 160 hours of service to the BLM Wenatchee Field Office, supporting conservation stewardship, providing access to outdoor recreation opportunities, and creating a dialogue with/supporting local communities.
  • Collaborate with BLM staff to develop outreach programs or events that engage youth and families from the local community in outdoor recreation and foster positive visitor experiences and conservation stewardship of public lands.
  • Gain firsthand knowledge of the BLM’s multiple-use management of public lands through mentoring and shadowing opportunities provided by BLM staff.
  • Gain knowledge and skills in conservation stewardship, instructing in outdoor settings, engaging youth and families in outdoor recreation, and BLM history and multiple-use management principles.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, K-12 certified teachers, and able to commit to program requirements. The teacher will receive a $2,200 professional development stipend and paid tuition for a three-credit hour graduate course at the University of Colorado–Denver. Upon returning to their school in the fall, a TPL-experienced teacher can engage students and communities in activities that provide a greater understanding and appreciation of the public lands in their backyards, and the multiple use and sustained yield management and stewardship practices of the BLM.

For more information on the Teachers on Public Lands Program or an internship application, contact Diane Priebe (dpriebe@blm.gov). Application materials are due to Priebe by March 31, 2022.
