Today, representatives from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Sacramento State University joined over 200 'youth influencers' for the third annual Youth Summit - Connecting Youth to America's Great Outdoors."I am honored to share the experience at this year's youth summit," said BLM California State Director Jim Kenna. "The energy and enthusiasm of the participants and our partners represents their excitement for the outdoors and the future of our public lands."The summit is designed to connect youth to the outdoors, foster an appreciation and knowledge about the importance of natural resources and expose young people to higher education and career opportunities."The partnership [with BLM] provides the opportunity to expose underserved students from the local Sacramento area and introduces youth to career options related to natural resources that they may have never been exposed to otherwise," said Virdiana Diaz, Director of the College Assistant Migrant Program at Sacramento State. The summit featured a variety of workshops focused around leadership, education and career opportunities in natural resources as well as a youth panel discussion, a career expo and outdoor exhibits. The expo also featured more than 20 state and federal agencies and organizations promoting natural resources and outdoor activities, opportunities and careers including Sacramento State University, BLM, US Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, US Fish and Wildlife Service, California Conservation Corps, AmeriCorps, Environment for the Americas, Pacific Crest Trail Association, Student Conservation Association, Sierra Club, Latino Outdoors and Growing Up Wild.
