BLM road project will improve access to San Pedro House

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. – The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Tucson Field Office will conduct maintenance work the week of May 20 to improve public access at the entrance to the historic San Pedro House, located on the BLM-managed San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.
“The main access road will remain open during this work so that the public can continue to visit and enjoy the San Pedro House,” said Tucson Field Manager Jayme Lopez.
The gate at the head of the road will be replaced and the entrance re-graded with a new crushed rock surface.
The San Pedro House is a historic ranch house restored by the BLM and operated by partner the Friends of the San Pedro River as a bookstore and gift shop. The area around the San Pedro House features interpretive signs of various native plants of the area, riparian, watersheds and aquifers, and wildlife. The American Bird Conservancy has identified the San Pedro House as being significant for world bird conservation and officially designated a globally important bird area. The San Pedro House has a parking area, trash facilities, double-vault toilet, and picnic tables for public use. The area features a trail network for a variety of recreational uses such as hiking, bicycling, equestrian, and wildlife viewing.
