TRINIDAD, Calif. – Tours of the historic Trinidad Light Station and living history presentations about the demanding life of the light keeper's family will be offered in a free open house Sunday, Jan. 31, in at the historic lighthouse on Trinidad Head.

Tours will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and living history presentations by Julie Clark of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will be held throughout the day.   In the presentations, Clark will play the role of Josephine Harrington, wife of light keeper Fred Harrington, and recall a day when a 200-foot wave washed up to the level of the lighthouse deck.

Museum docents from the Trinidad Museum Society will share historic photos of the light station that was built in 1871.

Participants should park at Trinidad State Beach and hike the half-mile paved trail to the light station.  There will be no vehicle access.

The tours are offered by the BLM and the Trinidad Museum Society, offering opportunities to see recent refurbishing work by Scott Baker, a member of the museum society board of directors.

The 144-year-old Trinidad Head Lighthouse was transferred from the U. S. Coast Guard into public ownership and BLM management last year. The BLM is managing the facility cooperatively with the City of Trinidad, the Trinidad Rancheria and the Yurok Tribe. It continues to operate as a navigational beacon.

More information on the open house is available from Leisyka Parrott at the BLM, (707) 825-2313; or Patti Fleschner of the Trinidad Museum Society, (707) 677-3816.
