LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Bureau of Land Management is offering two outdoor events in February that take advantage of southern New Mexico’s outstanding public land resources.  These events include:

Feb. 17 – Prehistoric Trackways National Monument Guided Hike to Discovery Site
Meeting Place: Second parking lot at the monument entrance
Hike Duration: 9 a.m. to noon.
Description:  Join BLM paleontologist Colin Dunn for a guided hike to the Trackways’ Discovery Site.  Be prepared to hike approximately 3 miles on rough and rocky terrain, while learning all about the climate, organisms and marine life that inhabited the area 280 million years ago.  Also, see the wood and plants that have petrified over time.
Directions: Travel on Picacho Avenue and U.S Highway 70, at the stop light with Shalem Colony Trail.  Go north on Shalem Colony Trail for approximately 5.5 miles to Rocky Acres Trail.  Turn west approximately ¼ mile to a dirt road on the left side called Permian Acres.  Cross over a cattle guard and continue to the second parking lot.
Cost: Free.

Feb. 19 – Women’s Hike at the Pine Tree Loop Trail
Meeting Place:  Aguirre Spring Campground at the Pine Tree Loop Trailhead
Hike Duration:  9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Description:  All are welcome to join the BLM for the Women’s Hike on the Pine Tree Loop Trail.  Our goal is to create a space for women to be comfortable going at their own pace and to share their experience as women in the outdoors.  We will also be sharing hiking and recreational tips that focus specifically on women. Participants of this event are asked to bring a light backpack with water, a notebook, pen or pencil, snacks and a sack lunch. Wear plenty of layers, as temperatures can be unpredictable.  Closed-toe shoes, like hiking boots, are recommended.  This hike has an elevation gain of 1,023 feet.
Directions:  The access road to the campground is 14 miles east of the I-25/U.S. 70 interchange in Las Cruces, or 1.1 miles east of San Augustine Pass.
Cost:  Feb. 19 is a fee-free day at Aguirre Spring Campground - no entrance fees.
