BLM New Mexico implements fire restrictions at Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area and Lincoln Tracts

ROSWELL, N.M. – Abundant dry fuels (grasses, shrubs, and trees) and a prolonged drought have prompted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to implement fire restrictions on BLM lands at Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area and around the community of Lincoln beginning June 27 at 8 a.m., until further notice. The purpose of this action is to ensure the public health and safety of surrounding communities and minimize chances for wildfire starts.
Prohibited acts:
- Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove. Petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns and heating devices are allowed, providing they meet the fire underwriter’s specifications for safety.
- Smoking. Exceptions are: in an enclosed vehicle or building; at a developed recreation site; or while stopped in an area at least three-feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.
- Possessing, discharging or using any kind of firework and other pyrotechnic or incendiary device. The use of exploding targets in recreational shooting is already prohibited on all BLM lands in the state.
Violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both. Restitution for total costs of fire suppression or damage will be borne by the violator.
