Wild horses and burros essentially have no natural predators, resulting in a rapid increase in population. If not appropriately managed, herds double in size in just 4 to 5 years. To maintain wild horse and burros in good condition and protect the health of public land, BLM must manage the population growth of wild horses and burros.

As of July 24, 2018, there are nearly 44,000 wild horses and burros that are fed and cared for at off-range pastures, corrals and eco sanctuaries. The wild horses and burros roaming the public rangelands are protected by the BLM under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. The BLM estimates about 81,951 wild horses and burros roaming the BLM-rangelands in 10 Western states.

The Chickasaw Nation is providing all attendees with coupons for a tour and lunch at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. For more information about the off-range pasture tour or the WHB Program, please call the national WHB information call center at 866-468-7826 or email wildhorse@blm.gov.
